Help - Clutch release arm not returning - Now the Trans is out

caused the pedal to not release fully (as the clutch itself could not engage

I would check all fingers from the pressure plate, ensuring they all sit
even (i.e. the metal piece did not cause any of them to bend). 
A quick check regarding the clutch pushrod is easily done with the reanny
off of the car - with the arm fully up, the pushrod should extend ~1/4" from
the end of the input shaft. Actuating the arm should smoothly extend the 
pushrod slightly more than 1/2".
