Hatch seal question

Yeah, I noticed that Nate's car doesn't have a metal insert either,
clearly not an OEM part, which I suspect is the reason why his hatch
leaks so bad.
As far as the location of the gap, if I had a choice I'd put it bottom center.
But since it's already on I'd just fill it with some silicone.
