I think often the Allen head (or Torx, or triple square for that matter) is
used when outer clearance with a traditional socket would be problematic.
I'm 99% sure the Allens I've stripped recently were already helped on their
way by someone else, and that more tapping and cleaning wouldn't have
helped them. I'm more apt to snap a corroded Allen if it was previously
unmolested, than to strip it. So blame the PO, I say.... and replace with
another Allen, using antisieze as appropriate. Iffy stuff gets Kroil ahead
of time, a good head cleanout and a firm tap. Sucks when they strip
though...(also sucks when they snap) Gotta love corrosion...

And CVs? Not Allens so far as I know, that's another reason to strip them,
using the wrong bit. I wondered why my TB bolts seemed sloppy with my
Allens, and found they were actually Torx.
