90mm vs 100mm axle question

Ok, can someone give me a definitive answer?
In my distant memory, I recall that one can not use the
100mm axles in the 90mm hub/bearing assemblies. (It'll go
in but the wheel won't turn.) My question is, can I safely
use the 90mm axles in the 100mm hub, or will I trash wheel
bearings in no time? I'll need this information before I
head back to Cathy's this weekend....
