timing belt cover @#$%!?

While removing the upper timing belt cover, per usual, this time the weird flanged nut in the center of the cover would not release -- apparently its stud has come loose so that when I turn the nut it is actually unscrewing the stud from the block.  Which wouldn't be so bad except it won't allow enough clearance to get the damn cover off.  Has this ever happened to anybody?  Is there a workaround, other than hacksaw violence?
