(Tech Q/ OT: 95 Golf) 2Ls and chips

Sorry for the OT post, but you can reply off list, someone must know, and
this is a more reliable source of valid info than most. My nephew is in the
midst of an extensive rebuild on his 2L GTI, and it's throwing some codes.
Which indicate problems with the throttle potentiometer (TPS) and engine
speed sensor (crank sensor). If there were serious problems with these, the
car shouldn't start, and it does. Also, the tach works, so this indicates
some signal from the identified problem sensors. It hunts for idle and will
only roll when the clutch is feathered very carefully, so something's
clearly wrong.

Now to the meat: He also had an aftermarket chip installed by a go-fast
shop (Autothority chip) and the car had no fuel/no spark. It was installed
backwards, and switching it the right way around gave the above result. So
would the fact that the chip was in backwards have reduced/fried the
Motronic II's ability to deal with the input from the sensors concerned?

Further complicating the matter is that compression has been seriously
increased, and the head has been decked, so cam timing may need adjusting.

ANY insight is greatly appreciated, this is not how I'd proceed, it'd be
one thing at a time, not this mess, but hopefully they can get it sorted
out. Resetting the codes reasults in them appearing again next time the car
starts.

ANy Motronics/chip tning experts LMK what you think...
