CV joint or what?

Nate,

Due to the ripped CV boot, I suspect the CV joint dried out (grease escaped via ripped boot) and or some dirt got inside causing your issues. I'll bet you have CV grease all over the place. If it is the outer, you find a mess all over the strut housing, wheel well, and finally, your rim :( You may be able to salvage the CV by cleaning it out with a lot of brake clean and packing the CV and a new boot. A kit is cheap enough ($12)? I just did this on my Corrado after having a ripped outer boot for a week or two. Otherwise, order up a rebuilt axle shaft which should have two CV's packed with grease and ready to go for you. They usually want yours as a core. I recall a 9A tranny has 90mm flanges so any A2 - 8V axle shaft will work for you on your Mk1. Only the 2Y and AGB (both via 16V cars) have 100mm flanges. If you do the boot yourself, I recomend some plastic gloves as the grease is nasty. Also use brake clean liberally to clean out your old CV joint.

Thanks,

Jim

Well, it seems my CV joint has finally decided to die on me. Well, at
least I think it's the CV joint. I noticed the boot was ripped a
little while ago so I've been expecting it to die, but it doesn't
feel/sound quite the same as when I've had them die before.

It started yesterday with a sound like the tire was rubbing at one
spot, a rhymic "rub" sound that varied with the speed of the car. Now
it has become more like a "crunch" type sound, but it still varies
with the speed of the car. It has also gotten louder. I also think
it's worse when turning, but that could be my imagination.

So CV joint correct? Or is it something else? Wheel bearing perhaps?

And if it is the CV joint, what car should I ask for an axle from when
I call my FLAPS considering this is a mk1 with a 9A tranny in it? TIA

Nate
