They're actually stupid enough to tell this to people??
Is the warranty up in 36 months?

This is what the instructors told the mechanics while they were training them on the new cars, not the general masses...

As for warranty, I dunno. I have to assume the bumper to bumper is still 36 mos, I don't know on the drivetrain. Luckily, I do not deal with those issues at all...

To rattle on about that topic ;^), I have been doing some research (on the web of course) about why German cars are not as sturdy as they were say 10-15 years ago... To demonstrate that they are not as strong now as they have been, the German equivalent of JD Powers (I can't recall the name) rates VW in the thirties in regards to overall satisfaction... Mercedes is close to it also in the thirties, while Porsche and BMW are the only two German marques under 20 (7 and 14 respectively, IIRC)... BTW, the rice-burners and Kim-Chi crockpots are the only ones at 10 and under!

I began to do some snooping around, and discovered a few articles that show the German government has been working with all major manufacturers (not just cars) in trying to make their products easier to recycle when they eventually do fail.
I began looking when a friend who is on IATN (IIRC, Import Automotive Technicians Network) kept seeing a number of wiring harnesses failing on Mercedes Benz', and they were under 2-3 years of age! Anyways, I can't find direct evidence, but I propose the following: In using materials that are easier to recycle, they decrease the longevity of said items... This would definitely seem to be true with the case of wiring and plastic trim in VWs and Mercedes both...

Here is an article I wrote on Vortex about it with a few links. There are a few stories with 'German manufacturers' and 'Recycling' as the search parameters...

Not fun news, but I think it is worth sharing...
