Advice on a daily beater Scirocco

Probably will be fine, just change them again (the oil more
so than the coolant) after a few hundred miles.

Well as someone mentioned, it might just be the clutch
cable, they do snap now and then.  Replacing all the
coolant hoses would not be a bad thing too.

It's possible it has developed a leak, you'll just have to
test it.

What weight oil are you running?  In Texas I would be
running something fairly heavy.  Mine run Castrol 20w50 in
the summer (which you could get away with all year) and
10w40 in the winter (for those that are winter driven!) 
Failing that, yes, it is possible that the bottom end could
be getting tired but I've always found it incredibly
difficult to kill the JH engine.  Perhaps the pump is
getting tired.
