fuel pump relay

Oddball question to the list:

When a fuel pump relay is on its way out, does it fill the car with burning
wire smell as you drive home from work, yet somehow still manage to work
correctly?

I think that's where the smoke was coming from, but I found it odd that
everything was still working normally as I drove home today.
