Axle flange wear question

Hmmm.....
If there's a "stream" of lube coming from inside the flange as opposed to an
occasional drip then it sounds like the splines are really worn to make
enough of a gap for a "stream".
Maybe you'll be lucky and just the flange splines are toast and the diff
shaft is still OK. I recently replaced the flanges on my tranny and had to
press them onto the shafts, so maybe the shaft is harder.
If the end of the axle shaft is actually contacting the inside of the flange
then you have big trouble. Can't imagine you wouldn't hear this, but kids
can be amazingly deaf ;^)
Anyway, actual contact would be putting huge loads not only on the flange,
but also the diff bearings, the CV's and the suspension pieces.
It would be something that would need to be fixed even if it did mean
raising the car some.
One thing to check is to see if it's happening on both sides. If that is the
case then raising the car would seem like the only option. If it's only on
one side you may be able to move the engine/tranny laterally to get enough
clearance.
