Sputters and dies

Yes that does sound like what happend to mine, but with out the howling pump. That sir seems to be a barking at the moon event (translation you got me), Other then that the symptoms are very similar and anoying! Once the distributor was cahnged I had no problems. I know this may even sound insulting, but is the relay for the pump sitting in rigth? or better yet replaced?

Hmmm maybe . What mine is doing is it starts fine I can drive for a while maybe 5-10 min then it starts to cut out and the main pump starts to scream like it's being starved. after it dies it will start right back up but will sputter and die. Sound like your problem? maybe i can swap out the distributor. I just don't understand why that would cause the pump to sound like its running dry.

The Tach went crazy, with the needle bouncing all over the place and the sounds of what seem to be back fire were coming from under the hood. Then the car would die and finally it would sound like a carburated version of a car that was getting flooded when I tried starting it back.

Didn't fix it. it will run for a bit then the main pump starts to howl and the car sputters and dies. So what your guess? Still a bad transfer pump? main pump? Could it be a fuel filter issue?
