And then there...... Now Hi-Speed Net

I have never had, nor have I ever worked with satellite based internet, but
I do know it sucks. Here is why:

latency
lA-t&n(t)-sE

The time that elapses between a network request and the moment that request
is met. In networking, latency and bandwidth are the two factors that
determine the speed of your connection; latency refers to the time it takes
for a data packet to move across a network connection [or the network
circuit].

<http://www.netlingo.com/right.cfm?term=latency>

High bandwidth with a lot of latency still sucks!

Even at the speed of light, the distance traveled between point a (you),
point s (the satellite), point gs (ground station), and point ud (ultimate
destination) is often 10x that of strictly terrestrial based broadband. And
this is does not count the huge number of hops between the source and
destination.

-Marc on crappy cable modem because I'm 14,000 feet from my CO making me DSL
ineligible

I'll tell you what not to do and that's get satellite internet. On paper, it
looks pretty good and pretty fast but in reality it sucks ass. Great for
downloading/uploading but for basic web surfing, you'll think you're still
using dial-up.

Unfortunately, some of us can't get High Speed. It just isn't available to
my neighborhood!
Kirsten hates my dial-up, but somehow suffers through it to upload her cool
videos. Really fun when
the connection breaks halfway through the upload too. I pretty much hate it
too, but what are you
going to do?
