starts and stalls

I should really invest in the "special tool" because nobody has one. And I've needed it in the past.

The "tool" also known as "you have to bring it to the dealership and spend alot of money, tool"

I originally thought it was the fuel pump and did the following with
inconclusive results:
1)Turning the key on doesn't make the pump run but after trying to
start it I can hear it for a few second and I can hear it while it
lopes along on starting fluid
2)I couldn't get any voltage at the pump with the key on although I
didn't actually pull the connectors off to test.
3)Jumpering ports 4/6 on the relay didn't make the pump run.
4)For a couple of days before it died I noticed a high pitched humming
or whining coming from the relay/fuse panel...I didn't know what it was
at the time but I'm wondering if it was the relay. Although if it were
the relay wouldn't the pump run if I jumpered the terminals? PS I
didn't have spade connectors so I just shoved wire in the relay
terminals.
See what I mean about inconclusive results? #1 doesn't really tell me
anything, #2 and #3 make me think the pump is bad and #4 just confuses
me. I suppose I could run cables directly from the battery to the pump
to be certain it works...How does that sound?

I can't get the injectors out by hand and apparently need the 'special
tool' to pull them and check flow rates. I'm assuming/hoping that the
'cleaning' V-dub Folks performed makes that unnecessary....

I'd hate to blow a wad of cash on a new pump and find out that's not
it. Errr...where and what is a transfer pump(!?).

You guys rock! Muchas Gracias for the help!
