What I learned today (now gone OT)

The whole assembly does come out, which happens in one of two ways. Both
involve getting your hand into a teeny space to exert fairly large force
on a plastic release lever. In the case of the TDI, it's wedged in behind
the fuel filter on the PS, DS is not much better. Once you get the lever
released, assuming you can get it to move, and you don't break it, the
headlamp assembly should side out. That's option A. Option B is where it
decides to be a beeeyatch and not move on its little rails. Cursing and
hammers are helpful. Or you can unscrew the front clip ;)
Once out, the one bulb is depressed way down into the assembly, making
the familiar clips extra special to get at. For whatever reason, bulbs
tend to blow frequently. And installation is reverse of removal, so
swear like this "htcib gn%^8uf ouy evom".
Brake lights are a tease, there's a nice big round hatch cover you pry
off, thinking that you'll be able to access the bulb directly. But no,
this is a ne4w beetle after all. You're faced with moulded sheet metal and
a knob. Which dosen't want to turn, and is likely anchoered in plastic on
the other end. It releases the lamp housing, well, after you pry it free
of the body and the clips in there.

So for most people, it'd be a dealer job, and I've had them do it about
half the time, especially in winter, when things get a bit brittle.

So there, myths of engine removal have been dispelled. But then many newer
cars are a pain, I remember doing plugs in Denny's exPT and it seemed like
you needed to take half the engine apart to get at them. But plugs last
the life of the car, err, lease, so why make it easy?
