Alternator question

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I do believe that you are refering to the exiter cable that is found on the 90Amp alternators. It is ussually a light blue 14-16g cable that runs from the battery to the w on the alternator. With that said I could be confusing things and have it all wrong. My understanding if that this cable provides juice at start up hence the name exiter cable.

Question: How did you modify things so the the 90amp lines up? I have to do the same to my 82. Are you still AC equipied? Cause i hate the fact to have to do this mod with the ac in place, but Im not going to start tearing into that!

Recently I swapped out Dieter's stock 65 amp alternator for 90(?) amp alternator I had rebuilt for my Jetta ECOdiesel but didn't need. I had to modify the mounting bolt bracket on the case so the pullys would line up and build a plug so I didn't have to alter the original wiring but I got it in. It throws out plenty of juice according to the GTI volt meter which has replaced the clock. The problem is when I first start the car the alternator doesn't start charging until I rev it up to around 4 grand! After that it's fine. What have I missed? There is the W plug on the alternator which has no wire in the original harness, do I need to add one? If so where does the other end go? I would appreciate any advice.

Thanks,

Behrle

P.S. I did manage to get a few decent pewter Scirocco key fobs cast before the mold gave up. The resin hosed the RTV mold. If any one is still interested I can send you one.
