  If you can weld SS, you won't have that much trouble with titanium.  The
basic skills are the same and the ti only requires more care in protecting
the joint from atmosphere.  Come to think of it, that may not be that much
of an issue in fabricating parts for automotive use.  (I've seen the welds
on the titanium Corvette Z06 exhausts and they would not begin to pass an
aerospace critique.)
  I've been welding and machining titanium for many, many years and find it
is a MOST enjoyable material to work with.  One note: do not try to use
Grade 2 ti for structural parts.  This is more commonly known in the
industry as CP or Commercially Pure and is far too ductile to use where real
loads are encountered.  It is used for medical applications and in other
highly-corrosive environments that do not have high stresses.  If you want
to make stuff useful to us, use 6Al-4V... sometimes called Grade 5.  This
alloy is far stronger and just as easy to work with.
