Broke my clutch cable in Saturday Rush-hour traffic

About greasing up the cable, I was always told to use oil, NOT grease. I
could see the grease attracting more grime, but would there be any other
reasons? With the 2 clutch cables I've replaced(2 different cars) I've used
gun oil(lol) and had no problems.
