stereo help...

Crutchfield.com is the hands down best site for car audio. Besides the fact that their prices, quality, customer service and vast amount of things they have for sale can't be beat, they're also the best site for reference. Whenever I'm checking out used audio gear, particularly headunits, I always go to their site and put in the model number. Almost always I can pull up the complete info on any model (bare in mind I'm strictly Panasonic for HUs). Even discontinued models are still listed on their site for how much they sold it for. You get all the specs which often will tell you things the seller left out. Their little blurb on the product is usually more on the informative side than the trying to sell you side. On top of that, they'll tell you about the next model up or a similiar model that is only a little more and has more/better/different features.

On a similiar note, does anyone have a MK1 trunk cover that has fairly clean 6x9 holes cut in it? Or maybe one that has crappy fabric? It must be flat though, not warped like many get. I have a creme colored uncut one in excellent shape aside from 23yrs of sun beating on it. It seems sacriligous to cut holes in it but I need a home for my 6x9s. Willing to trade.

They do and I've just ordered a set of 4X6X2s for the doors.

Thanks Dan!

Instead of building a little box, which sounds like it has the potential to be a huge PITA, just go buy a set of baffles. They're rubber bowl (dog dish) shaped and come in all kinds of sizes. I'm pretty sure www.crutchfield.com has them. Mk4s use these behind their speakers and it definitely helps. Plus, if you have moisture hanging out in your door for whatever reason, these will keep your speaker nice and dry.

Try creating a box behind the speaker.

Bingo.
Look at where the speakers bolt in. There's a gap all around them, thus
making them work in "free air". Ever listen to a sub not in a box?
Personally I like my fronts for teble, not bass. But if it does bother you,
try some custom work on the door panels. Basically you want to isolate the
front of the speaker from the back. Just look up the specs on your speakers
and some info on box building and you can find out what you need for the
sound you like.
I'm no "audiophile" and I don't know everything, but I can hold my own.

your problem is not with the wiring, its with the doors.
try this. fold down the rear seat and remove the hatch cover. then listen to
the stereo. no bass.
bass in the rear is good, as the hatch acts as an enclosure to develop the
bass.
scirocco doors are very poor at developing bass, especially if using 4x6's.
