To add to this, with any spark, there is some sacrifice of the material from where the spark originated.  This is the reason points were such a pain in the ass, as they eventually errode such that all the material eventually ends up on the exiting point.  The same is true for plugs.  Platinum happens to hold up better than most at sacrificing material the least...
