Money Pit or What_the_Hell_I_Love_My_Roc



I always get a kick out of trying to justify my project to people
(namely the 'rents) because they just don't understand why anyone would
want to restore a car like this.

If you're in it for a "restoration" project, then pouring money into it
is half the fun.  It's like a child ;)

Personally, in this situation, if my stock dash goes bad (which it has,
by my standards) then it will be replaced with non-stock.  One of the
later phases of my project (when I have the time) is to custom fabricate
a new, completely redesigned one.  I KNOW it could be done a whole lot
cheaper than 300 or double that or whatever it is to get one of these
contours refinishes and probably not even that much more than buying a
good used one (if you can find it) or NOS (if it even exists at this
point).

Just the way I see things I guess.  I see things the same way about
keeping the car, though.  I don't ever want to sell it, so hopefully
every dime I spend is money I get to enjoy for years and years to come.
That's a better deal than anything else I can think to spend money on
(sans the girlfriend ;)

Well, it does come down to who's writing the book.

I'm keeping the Roc so improvements on it don't really = out to resale 
value.

(This is going to become a different thread than you intended, hence 
my spawning it off on it's own.)

I have seen people mention the incredulous replies from their 
'brothers and others' saying "Why would you put all that money into a 
car ("...a VW?!"), you'll never be able to get your money out when you 
sell it..." or words to that effect.

Well I might sell the 81, but I doubt it, and if I did I'd be pulling 
most all the good bit's off to transplant onto the replacement in any 
case.

I do understand conventional thinking, bu I don't think many people 
are orientated quite the right way to see my 1981 Volkswagen the same 
way they might an American Muscle Car like a 'Cudda or a classic
Mustang.

But that's how_I_ see it; restoration or improvement of every bit is 
the goal, enjoyment and satisfaction are the rewards.

So, is $300 too much, or just a lot, to spend on a dash repair that 
purports to improve things better than stock and will remain crack 
free until.

After all, besides the steering wheel (and the butt dyno interface) 
the dash is the single most noticeable part of the car (visually) that 
the owner/operator deals with on a day to day basis.


Maybe it's work saving up for.
