FF vs FO tranny

Subject: FF vs FO tranny

When I asked the guy at pick-a-part for a tranny I said "a transmission 
form a 1980 scirocco" well the one I got was a FO transmission. The one 
that came out of the my car is a FF. Is there any significant difference 
here or is it just gearing?
