Shifter play problem

Your shifter bushings are probably very worn. It is most likely the 2 plastic ones that are at the top and bottom of the vertical shaft.You can buy these in a rebuild kit. If you lie under the car these will be close to the exhaust down pipe. They
should be shielded from the exhaust by some sheet metal. I have headers and they got so hot that they melted the new bushings I had put in. I turned some brass ones on a lathe and there was vertually no side to side movement in the shifter afterwards.
Eventually it loosened up .though.
