shim kit on a turbo 16v



Just an observation made tonight while bombing around at 3am on deserted
streets with a fresh 8"+ of snow on the ground:  the shim kit rocks in
the snow!  I just got new Michelin Arctic Alpins installed the other
day, so with the snow coming down hard I decided to practice some
left-foot-braking and get a feel for the new tires...

I stopped and analyzed the tracks of a couple of my more impressive
rally style sliding turns, and it was obvious that both front wheels
were clawing at the snow.  I wish my video camera worked - I had an
absolute blast!

Having installed the shim kit about 8 months ago, I've had some time to
gather a few observations.  First, both wheels will spin if you drop the
clutch in first (or even hammering it in second now that I have my
ABA/JH in there) - a bit of 'coolness' factor there, since you're not
laying down the 'one wheel peel'...  Beyond that though, I'm not so sure
how effective it is at helping distribute power to the wheel with grip.
If one wheel is off on the shoulder and I pin it, the car accelerates a
bit more than with a stock tranny, but the wheel in the dirt spins
madly.

Coming out of a tight slow corner, it feels like it really helps for the
first second or so, but once the inside wheel starts spinning you have
to back-pedal it to keep from boiling the inside tire...  It feels like
it's really trying, and then suddenly says "f**k it, I give up".  This
is where the quaife would be really nice...

IMHO, a quaife is almost a necessity with anything over 150 or so
horsepower.  The car will be SO much quicker.  I'm pushing close to 130
whp (if I'm lucky) with my ABA/JH, and I could even put a quaife to good
use on less-than-ideal roads (sandy/slippery corners).  One other thing,
the shim kit is less effective with time.  I'm EXTREMELY hard on my
cars, so this may not apply to everyone, but in 8 months I estimate the
effectiveness of the kit is about half of what it once was...  At first
there was a lot of torque steer felt through the steering wheel when
doing a stoplight dragrace, as the tires were fighting for traction.
Now one wheel will start to spin much more easily, lessening the feel of
torque steer.

If you're ripping a tranny apart to strengthen it, I would suggest
finding the money to slap a quaife (or Peloquin) in while you're at it.
You'll be happy you did...  But for the budget minded, $90 for the shim
kit is worth it - I'm glad I got it, especially for the winter months...
