My scirocco knocked out by a ford!

Went for a ride with my wife last night. Just kind of driving around on some little roads here. I get to a tiny road that has an open ford (for you city folk, that's a stream crossing with out a bridge). It was getting dark and I remember the water not being too deep so I go across. I thought I was in trouble when the water splashed over the hood! I made it across, but alas, my car died on the other side. I was totally tool-free, with no flashlight. I took off the distributor cap and the plug wires and put them back on. It still took about 20 minutes for the engine heat to dry things out enough to start. For me, the best part was my wife didn't give me a hard time about it even though she asked me if my car was too low to make it across.
I did have a question in all this, was the cause of it not running water in the cap? I've never had it happen to me before, but than again, I don't do many stream crossings.
