Because.



I could go on about how the list isn't a Binary Newsgroup, some folks 
get lots of plain text mail just from normal messages generated by said 
list, some folks don't run picture friendly systems, the overhead on 
bandwidth and temp space HD wise increases a few magnitude, etc, etc.

It works well to post a link to a published pic.
