..Now VIN...and the saga continues (rain+fuses)

The VIN should tell you the year, and it is on the car in a few places, I
think in the rain tray stamped in the metal as well as the little plaque on
the dash. (so you can check to see that they all match, and you're not
driving a dash swapped car, where else are they hidden?) The VIN should go
VWV***53*JK######, where the *s are various designations about engine, body
style, etc. The tenth character (on yours) should tell the year, an A being
1980, and going up until T for 1996, not sure what they did after that, I
guess I could go brave the freezing rain and check my 99. Anyways, an 88
should have a J there. And the older ones start at 5 for 75, and go up to 9
for 79, a bit easier to figure out. (But they may all have those shorter
VINS which confuse the DMV) Other info is in the VIN as well, like the VWV
indicates a European VW passenger car, we all love the 53 on this list (
means Scirocco) and the K means it was made in Osnabrueck. The last numbers
tell you what number it was off the line that year( mine's #245), so you can
tell if your Scirocco and another are twins. (If you really get into it,
there's a "born on" date on the tranny too, but that may predate the car's
productin buy a few months)

Sort of like becoming a Cabbage Patch parent, all this birth certificate
data? (I mean, does it really matter? It does to us eh...)

FWIW, mine has power mirrors, but a manual roof and windows. Take out the
roof and you have your configuration, so it's not impossible that the
original owner was a tall guy who ordered it with no sunroof.
