Kinda OT: What does overdrive mean?

The most basic definition is: any gearset in the transmission that is less than 1:1 ratio. (e.g. 0.95:1)
For instance, one of my cars has a 6-speed and both 5th and 6th are 'overdriven' or less than 1:1. Fourth, however IS 1:1.
Because the rear end (differential) ratio is far greater than 1:1 ( 3.45:1, in my case) the engine still rotates at a greater rpm than the rear axle, even in overdrive.

I had someone ask me what overdrive means in a transmission, but I don't know. Can someone explain it to me? Thanks
