1982 Scirocco Electrical Problem

Thank you everyone.  The problem is fixed.  Another one of those that, if
one had only learned to think logically, you would have saved a lot of work!
I misled myself by thinking that the only place the two circuits were
adjacent was in the switches or at the relay panel.  There was, of course
one other place, where the w/s washer motor and the front RH signal lamp
share a ground wire at the motor connector.  I really don't think VW meant
these cars to last for 22 years.  They used a cheap plastic insulated wire
with a stranded conductor of bare copper.  This reacts in our weather
conditions to corrode the wire away just at the crimp of the connector,
leaving the wire apparently still attached, though only by the insulation.
In my case the wire going to ground open circuited, leaving the wire from
the lamp intact.  The perfect "ground loop"!  Ten minutes to fix then
another forty to put back all the underdash panels that didn't need to be
removed anyway.
