Is megasquirt/standalone practical to be using on an NA engine?
Specifically a built up 3a?   It looks like a great alternative, being cheap
and supposedly very tunable, I just want to know if I will see worthwhile
gains out of this, which could be any gains really, considering the low
cost.

In word, YES!  There are several on Vortex that swear by it.  There was
someones' 2.0 8V (don't remember which engine code) with Independent
Throttle Bodies (ITBs) that had something like 145 or 150 at the wheels.  I
would love to do this myself, but haven't the time or the computer
background to begin.  I do have a friend that will eventually do this to his
own, and two others including myself have agreed to help and also go in on a
group buy...

There are a few here on the list that have direct experience...  If you have
some computer experience, I say go for it...
