16v: how do i keep oil NOW: Car companies

On the same note, almost every car company has designed cars with certain parts that are poorly thought of.
Examples; Inside the steering column on US cars there is a combination of metal and plastic componets that will eventually wear themselves down. On foreign cars, the shift linkage leading into the engine bay connects to the transmission rod, they are connected with a piece of plastic which after awhile does break and cost a couple hundred to fix.

Car companies do and don't make cars to fail, they just quit putting any real thought into designing them.
It's getting to the point that cars are more computer than engine which we all know what happens to computers, they crash, get sick, etc.

I would much rather keep an old car alive if possible. Money is definately the issue, and being able to get parts is the other.

Keep em' going.

Along these lines, I've heard from a few people about a rumor regarding straight 6s. I heard that they lasted for ages and were super reliable, durable engines and because they lasted so long, companies opted to stop using them. Sounds like an urban legend, but I figured someone here would know.

Also, to further muddy the waters, car companies don't necesarily build to fail, but when they notice various small parts that seem to be a weak link often they don't redesign it if they figure it will be cheaper to just fix it later. Honda had this issue in the late 90s I believe. But then again, I could be 100% wrong on everything.

The fact that they do fail doesn't mean they are designed to do so! If you design for failure it's
guaranteed that is what you'll get. If you design for reliability you don't always achieve it.
You have heard of J.D. Power??
No car company wants a crappy reputation and designing for failure is a sure fire way to get one!

A3 body style, not near the longevity... BTW, no offense was intended, so puuulease do not take
what was not there...
