Many years ago, when Chrysler was hurting, the Omni/Horizon
was a spitting image of the original VW Rabbit. IIRC, the
engine was sourced from VW, down to the VW logo on the block.
I'm real foggy on this, but I think that block was the basis
for the Dodge GLH turbo, from whence came the rest of the
Chrysler turbo line.  So, it may not be so far fetched.  Or
I could be totally wrong. But it might be worth Googling.
