Installing new rear calipers...

The Bentley says to lay new calipers on their side and pour brake fluid into the bleeder valve until no more air comes out the brake line hole. Is this just to "pre-bleed" the caliper and not really necessary, or will this cause problems if i don't? I ask because even my smallest funnel won't fit into the clear hose I have on the bleeder, and I'm making a horrible mess trying to keep the caliper on its side then pour... and to install with the caliper full of fluid? forget that!
I'll take any shortcuts I can get... is that bad? ;)
