Tranny interchange

Jon
honestly, you can throw anything in there, the only thing that would be
different is the ratios. the newer ones may have larger driveshaft flanges,
but thats an easy swap from the old one. the only other hang-up is you have
to stay away from 2Y/AGB(came in rocco 16v)/AMC/CHE/DFQ, since those
trannies have larger input shaft diameters, which would require a different
clutch disc (not a big deal really, if you are changing the clutch anyhow -
just ask for a clutch disc for an 88 16v rocco instead). if you go past 92
or see anything with a cable shift linkage in the engine bay (i.e. passat),
that is an O2J tranny, and is more involved to install (i.e. pain in the
ass, so dont bother).
