Alternator understanding

blue wire supplies voltage to the alternators internal regulator. this way
the alternator regulates its output voltage based on the actual voltage
reaching the center of the electrical system (specifically a module inside
the instrument cluster). if this wire is not connected, the alternator
cannot regulate its output correctly, and you usually end up stranded (since
the alternator stops maintaining the batteries charge, and eventually it
runs dead).

Subject: Alternator understanding

I want to understand how my alternator works. So far I know that the engine
spins, the belt moves and turns the alternator. I need to know what the
blue "exciter" wire does. Is it like the switch wire on a relay?
