16V MK1 conversion with AC

Has anyone put a 16V in a Mark 1 Scirocco and kept the airconditioning.  
I have recently picked up an '81 thanks to Dave Ewing and it has the 
factory airconditioning in it.  The 16V motor I kept has the AC pump on 
it.  Can I mate the new and the old to make it all work or do I have to 
use the new stuff?
