full thottle switch

I think you're missing the point. A $7 multimeter or a $5000 multimeter...
it doesn't make any difference.

When you connect an ammeter across a battery (or any source of power, such
as a connector to the differential pressure regulator or whatever the 8v
equivalent is), the ammeter measures the flow of current from one lead to
the other. It is designed to be used in a circuit to measure the flow
through that (resistive) circuit. It has virtually no resistance of its
own.. so when you connect the leads, (at least in a perfect world) the
current goes to infinity and the voltage drops to zero across the meter
(bad!). If it weren't for the fuse built in to your ammeter, you would see
the insulation melting and bubbling off the ammeter leads.
