Oil and filters...

Yes the sqaure above the oil filter is a coolant to oil heat exchanger.
Most likley the gasket between the oil cooler and the braket that it is
screwed to is blown.  This happened to me and it leaks alot.  To change you
will need to remove the oil filter then remove the nut that hold the oil
cooler on the same stud ( 30mm deep socket) and change that o-ring.  Also
you will need to disconnect the coolant lines going to the oil cooler, so
you will need some coolant.  You will probably have to get the oring from
online or a vw dealer.  HTH
