Crank timing pulley ?'s




Sigh.  Let's go through this again:

engine	bore	stroke
1.5D	76,5mm	80,0mm
1.6D	76,5mm	86,4mm
1.9D	79,5mm	95,5mm  <<---- this includes TDI
1.6G	79,5mm	80,0mm
1.7G	79,5mm	86,4mm
1.8G	81mm	86,4mm
2.0G	82,5mm	92,8mm

As you can see, diesel blocks get their displacement from long strokes.  
The biggest I4 diesel block VW has marketed in North America to date
(1.9L) STILL only uses the same bore as a 1.6 gas block.  They have long
strokes in order to compress the intake air into a small space so it's hot
enough to ignite the fuel that gets injected into it... :)

You CAN stroke a 2L (presumably with some block clearancing) by using the 
1.9 crank at 95,5 to get 2042.

To make a long story short, TDI pistons are only an upgrade for a 1.6 gas 
engine, and there they'll likely net you in the range of 14:1 or 15:1 
compression ratio.
