VW bus vs Vanagon

Yeah, it's a tough call. The bus has the character, but the westy has a little more in the creature comforts dept. The bus also looks considerably smaller It isn't going to be a DD by any means, pretty much it's purpose will be camping and when I travel back to NY. So what I gather from most is that the bus is amazingly easy to work on and very cheap to maintain, both are a trade-off of comfort for camper ability. Excellent site by the way. Thanks partially to the list, it looks like I'm going to try for the bus and if that falls through, take a closer look at the vanagon. One thing I like about the bus is that there's nothing in it. I can rip everything out of it and rebuild the whole interior to how I want it, all for about a day's work and maybe $50 of stuff from the hardware/lumber store.

Thanks for all the info,
Dan

An air-cooled VW bug was one of my first cars. It has
to be the simplest thing to work on, although you could
use an extra joint in your arm when changing spark
plugs. The Bus has more room for that.

For character alone, I'd pop for the late 60s bus. It's
not going to be a daily driver, so its shortcomings
(slow, no heat, poor defroster) wouldn't be much of
an issue (but NY to CO would be a challenge).
On the other hand, an 81 Westie is will also be slow,
(and I'm guessing here) no heat, no defroster. But it
should ride and handle better than the 60s version.
