digi 1 vs MS

Depends on what car you're tuning.
Mild engine i.e NOT ITB's and normally aspirated, then I think you can
effectively tune with a narrow band sensor.
Wild NA or turbo? I think you need a wide band O2 to tune.

If you don't have a gut feel for what load and RPM points to select for your
VE table and a general idea of what the VE table should look like then I
would suggest you find somebody that does, learn more before jumping in or
pass on Megasquirt (and other aftermarket engine management systems)

There is also the issue of setting up accel enrichment, cranking pulse width
and warm up enrichment. This requires alot of trial and error and a narrow
band O2 sensor isn't going to help much here. Getting the warmup enrichment
right can only really be done once a day, so plan on dicking with it, laptop
in place, for quite a few mornings.

Also, I'd like to point out that engines will run over an incredibly wide
range of air/fuel ratios. So, there's a huge difference between getting an
engine to run on MS and getting the A/F ratio right for idle, cruise, power
and tranisitions.

Going to spend the day again tuning the wild-assed 2.0 8V with ITB's.
Hopefully, the other issues (like KS ignition setup) that caused big
problems last time will have been resolved and we can concentrate on tuning
instead of fixing. So, hopefully, I'll have another data point by the end of
the day.

Download the Megatune software. It will run without an MS hooked up. Take a
look. If the setup, enrichment and VE screens make sense then jump in. If
you're looking at a bunch of gobbledygook then it isn't going to get any
more understandable when it's controlling and engine.
