It sounds like the link that connects the rod at the firewall, the one with 
the many teeth that slides onto the shaft end (the nmae of that item escapse 
me), that could be put on one tooth to one side or another...  One time I had 
to play with that piece 13 times before I go it right...  Sounds like it might 
be time for a Bentley..

Yes, Julie mentioned before where I should have mentioned that yes, even with 
the kit from missinglinkz.com you will have to replace bushings to make it 
work right...  I recommend to replace the shifter base, the bracket/bushing 
that holds the shift rod as it comes form the shifter to the firewall, and 
then an inexpensive bushing kit to rebuild the rest of the bushes that you 
will not be able to replace with the kit...  All these items together will get 
a very firm, but still comfortable shifter feel...

Not really, as far as the shifter is concerned...  One thing you can do to 
help with getting it into first, is to put it into second first...  That often 
seems to help...
