I KNOW Jim just FORGOT to mention the support team that provided the
battery charger, that charged the battery, that started the 'vertible, that
got Jim back on the road, and that got Jim some nookie from Ron and Neal
;-).

Find yours yet, Jim? (battery charger, that is)

Somebody just posted about this a couple of days ago, I believe the answer was to drill the center out. This will allow you to drift the pins out, I'll try it today on the door I have behind the fence and take some pics. By drilling the center it allows the outer walls of the pin to compress (since it has a taper) and tap right out.

you see? i'm in a delirious state!@$!%!
i'm gone straight bonkers. alright then, so then off the crank comes.
should i take the whole
motor out, or can i just just take out the crank so i can have it machined?
if i have another bearing
cap machined with the crank at the same time, is that acceptable?

pretty much, it's more or less mega screwed. i'm gonna have to take out the
whole motor
most probably so i can have everything on the bottom end machined. sucky. i
don't get it.
the motor was fine last year when i put it away, and now it's totally
screwed. i didn't even
drive it, all i did was start it.

well i'm off to work now so i can check more damage and really see how
bad it is.

i'll update tonight when i get back.

oh man.

I'm not really clear on what the bearing shell looks like from this
description.
Also, not clear what's wrong with the bearing cap.

Since, you haven't done crank work before are you sure that the bearing cap
is damaged?

Can you give a better description? or can you have somebody that's familiar
with these parts take a look? or post some pictures?
Hate to see you go to all the work of pulling the engine before making sure
that the bearing cap and crank are really damaged.

One note is, if the crank bearing surfaces are smooth and not grooved then
the crank is probably not damaged.
Also, i've never seen a damaged bearing cap. You would have to have worn the
bearing shell entirely away before the crank could contact and damage the
bearing cap.

Maybe I'm not understanding your description, but it seems unlikely you'd
have all this damage without having some massive knocking/grinding noises to
go with it and a pile of metal particles.

DO NOT TAKE A BEARING CAP FROM ANOTHER ENGINE
>THAT YOU HAVE "LAYING AROUND"!! Bearing caps are precision machined to fit
>the block. You will most certainly have bearing, clutch, crank failure if
>you jsut slap something in there. If the bearing cap is fucked then
>consequently the block is fucked. This means engine time. However, it has
>been known to replace the bearing with OE stuff (I.E. the dealer kit) and
>make the engine last a bit longer. If you have a built race engine and
>this happened to you; then tear the whole thing down and start again. HTH.

you see? i'm in a delirious state!@$!%!
i'm gone straight bonkers. alright then, so then off the crank comes.
should i take the whole
motor out, or can i just just take out the crank so i can have it machined?
if i have another bearing
cap machined with the crank at the same time, is that acceptable?

pretty much, it's more or less mega screwed. i'm gonna have to take out the
whole motor
most probably so i can have everything on the bottom end machined. sucky. i
don't get it.
the motor was fine last year when i put it away, and now it's totally
screwed. i didn't even
drive it, all i did was start it.

well i'm off to work now so i can check more damage and really see how
bad it is.

i'll update tonight when i get back.

oh man.

paul

--__--__--

Message: 10
From: "Zamolxe Dacul" <YOYO_BALL@ZAPPMOBILE.RO>
To: <SCIROCCO-L@SCIROCCO.ORG>
Subject: VR6 on a Scirocco 1??
Date: Tue, 6 May 2003 16:28:00 +0300

Does anyone try to put a VR6 engine on a scirocco1??

--__--__--

Message: 11
Reply-To: "Dan Bubb" <JDBUBB@IX.NETCOM.COM>
From: "Dan Bubb" <JDBUBB@IX.NETCOM.COM>
To: "Paul Maione" <PAULMAIONE@VIDEOTRON.CA>
Cc: <SCIROCCO-L@SCIROCCO.ORG>
Subject: Re: bottom end inspection...
Date: Tue, 6 May 2003 10:12:38 -0400
