My first engine rebuild...

Well, the day has finally come after months of part-collecting and
machine shop services... the day that my 2.0 16v runs!

The engine made the journey from my place in Cincy to Daun's house
in Wilmington (where the gracious Mr. Yeagley has allowed my car to rest
for the winter months... thanks Daun!)
I spent the day Friday installing the engine and figuring out exactly
what parts I was missing.
Saturday, today, was spent finishing the install of the axles, hoses,
and the rest of the little bits and pieces... then came the oil and
coolant filling...

Without the spark plugs installed I cranked over the engine for the first
time to prime the engine for its first startup... no luck.
A combination of high compression, a worn out starter, and a battery that
resides in the trunk, and a fresh engine that is resistant to cranking
over... I just couldn't get a good enough crank to turn the engine
over fast enough for a start.

So, to make a long story shorter... later in the evening Daun and I tried
a few things to wake up the fresh engine. The first try was my brilliant
idea of spraying starting fluid into the intake manifold while the engine
was turning over. Wow, if you want a fire show give this a try!
The engine tried to start off the fluid and backfired... almost catching
me on fire! I have a few less hairs on my hand now. hehe.
This attempt was enough to get the engine going, and after more cranking
with the intake boot in place the engine started and ran on its own!!!
Aside from the lifters ticking away like a diesel and a few other issues,
I'm quite thrilled with the progress today...

I will be back at it tomorrow with a newer battery and an A2 diesel starter
for a little extra kick.

Can someone remind me about the single terminal hookup on these starters?
Something about supplemental voltage to the coil?

More to come... hopefully news about the first impressions on the break-in
runs! ;)
