diesel starter questions

I went with a 86 Golf diesel.

so if i have this correct.... the best starter set-up would be a deisel
starter with a 16v solenoid to run supplemental voltage to the ignition?
what year/model deisel can i get a starter from?

That could well be because the ignition circuit wasn't getting the
supplemental voltage from the solenoid.
