got my 2.5" centre pipe!

Hi Drew;
I took the yoke that clips on to the cast iron Jetta turbo diesel down
pipe and cut it off to about 1 inch. I then had my muffler shop flare a 2
and one quarter in pipe which we welded into the yoke. They then built a 2
and a quarter inch straight pipe to exit out the back. I also had the
muffler shop put a 45 degree bend in a pipe the same OD. as the turbo intake
side and used it to go to a rectangular K and N intake filter which I
installed in the rain tray. So now I have a much improved cold air intake
and a two and a quarter in straight pipe exhaust. My Jetta turbo diesel
setup is running on a 1600 N/A block and head ( Raceware head studs ). It
works wonderfully coupled with a FF 5 speed in my 1981 Rabbit pickup. The
turbo spools up quickly and pulls to the 10 LB waste gate in the lower gears
with ease. I have no exhaust gas temperature problem. At 70 mph on the
flats
I am running about 4 to 5 lbs. of boost and about 750 degrees F. or so on
the pyrometer.
I have about 40,000 miles now on the engine. The first 20,000 were with
a BAE turbo setup with which I could never cure the high exhaust gas
temperature problem ( I watched the pyro like a hawk and kept my foot out of
the pump ). With the VW Jetta turbo setup the high exhaust gas temperature
problem was solved. To anyone considering a turbo on their 1600 diesel I
highly recommend the VW Jetta setup but even tho there are still some BAE
turbo setups around I would recommend staying away from them.
