Intro and questions

Hi All,

I've been lurking on the list for about a year now and getting some great
tips. In the past I have owned a '72 Super Beetle, '76 Rabbit, '80 Scirocco,
'79 Scirocco, '87 16V Scirocco, '90 Corrado, 2k1 GTi VR6 and now I'm back to
a '79 Scirocco project car. With the exception of the soulless GTi, I have
worked on all my cars. "The Project" which I call it has come from a basket
case to becoming a rather competitive autoX car. I bought the car from a kid
in New Mexico for $300 and after about $3000 later I have a decent $500 car.
The Specs:

1.8l GX block hydro-head
4 speed trans
Header - unknown make
TT exhaust - Cat exempt (woohoo!!)
TT Race front and trans mounts
Sachs clutch with 16V PP
16V lower strut tie bar
Rear axle from an '82 Wolfsburg Scirocco (factory swaybar)
Boge struts and shocks

Everything that is not necessary has been removed, my goal is to have a just
barely legal ultimate autoX car. Nature has been doing it's part in
lightening the chassis also. I'm fixing the rust as I can using por15
products, even the dash is rusted through though!

OK, there's the intro, now on to the questions:

1st what dashboards will fit in this car without a wiring harness change?

2nd I have a crack about 2" between the passenger strut tower and the rain
tray thing on the inner fender, I'm thinking of having a piece of 1" square
tube welded from the inner fender to the strut tower and the rain tray thing
on both sides. Since I don't have an upper strut tie bar this should
re-enforce that area and act as an upper strut tie bar. Do any of you guys
see a problem with that or has it been done already?

I know I'll have more questions in the future, like where can I get that
really high density 1" foam for cheap? Pegasus has a 16" X 18" piece for
$62!!!!, I need to do 2 seats. I got a pair of 914 buckets for free and I'm
going to try and make some real lightweight race seats out of them. I have
them stripped to the fiberglass frames now. I'll probably re-enforce them
with aluminum before I re-upholster them.

TIA,

Tom C
