Tap n' Die Questions - longish

Yup, that's it. JFDI. The Helicoils themselves are very cheap, so once you get their special
tap, it's a no-brainer.

I know one successful racing team owner who helicoils ALL threaded holes (well, they're all in Al
alloys) as a matter of SOP. And I did two VW head bolt holes that got corroded and it's been
30,000+ miles with nary an problem.

Good tapping practice still applies: plenty of lube (tappng compound is best), hold the tap dead
straight on entry (critical), advance until you feel resistance, back off slightly (past the
little resistance you'll feel) then re-advance. Every so often remove the tap and clean the chips
from the flutes if you have to.
