Re ignition question.

Cathy take tou volt meter and make sure that you have 12volts at the coil.positive side. I think its the 15 wire.
The mkI's are famous for losing voltage thru the wiring connections and that may also apply to the Headache.
It sound as if you are not getting enough voltage to load the coil.If you don't have 12 volts start back tracking.look for corroded connections and don't forget to check the ground connections.
  If I remember correctly there should not be more than a 1/10 of a volt loss thru any connection.
