OT Welders

Brian-
I bought a nice little Miller (Millermatic 130XP) several years ago. It was new.
It was priced at $600, but by the time I added a new helmet lens, a bottle of CO2, the gas regulator and a 10-lb spool of steel wire, new gloves, anti-spatter spray, etc. .....it was over $800.
It works quite well for steel no thicker than 1/8" thick. It's about the lowest amperage unit (it's 130A/ @ 20% duty cycle...light duty) that would be at all useful.
You should be able to get a used unit with much more amperage for the same amount. (at least 200amps would be nice...250 would be even better)

Good brands are Miller, Lincoln, and one other (I'll have to look when I get to work tomorrow) that I can't recall the name of.

The best advice I can give you is get the most amperage you can afford and don't expect to do any aluminum welding with it. GMAW (aka MIG) aluminum can get to be very expensive with the special gun it requires. I've tried to do it with my unit (sans special gun) and it doesn't work.
Get a spool of flux-core wire while you're at it...it can come in very handy when you have to weld outdoors.

I'm looking for opinions for a Mig welder. Budget is under $1000.

Has anyone researched these lately or know of anyone with a MIG for sale?

  Thanks
